In an article addressed to the Italian people, the President of the Catalan Government, Carles Puigdemont, expressed his condolences for last Sunday’s accident in Freginals (Tarragona). The article, written in l’Unità, conveyed the President’s consternation for the thirteen victims who “came here to continue their university education with the joy and hope of a bright future before being prematurely taken away from us”.

The President’s article also noted the “affection and solidarity” demonstrated by Matteo Renzi towards those affected as he personally visited the families and those injured in the incident. According to the Puigdemont, the Italian Prime Minister’s gesture “honours the entire country and is the most human expression that a government can have when conveying the grief of an entire nation”.

Moreover, on behalf of the Government of Catalonia, Puigdemont affirmed that “we feel the pain [felt by the Italian people] as our own”.
