The Director General for Industry, Oriol Alcoba Malaspina, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Lotte Energy Materials, Kim Yeon-seop, and the Mayor of Mont-roig del Camp, Fran Morancho López, met last Wednesday at the Lotte group offices in Seoul (South Korea) to ratify their commitment to the opening of a plant producing copper foil (elecfoil), an essential component in the manufacturing of electric batteries, in this town in the region of El Baix Camp. During the meeting, which was attended by the Director General for Industry, the CEO of Lotte Energy Materials and the Mayor of Mont-roig del Camp signed a cooperation agreement covering the industrial project between all the parties. This agreement covers the administrative measures linked to the project, as well as mutual cooperation initiatives.

The Director General for Industry, Oriol Alcoba Malaspina, emphasised “the new owners’ commitment to a crucial project for the country. This is the largest greenfield industrial investment of the last 20 years in Catalonia, and electric mobility is a strategic sector.” Alcoba recalled that “the commitment to industry is one of the main objectives of the Catalan Government. That is why we will be working together with Lotte on the project.”

Meanwhile, Lotte Energy Materials CEO Kim Yeon-seop praised the agreement, which will “enable the establishment of a long-term partnership based on close mutual cooperation. We want the Mont-roig del Camp plant to become the base for supplying high-end elecfoil to the European market.”

The Mayor of Mont-roig del Camp, Fran Morancho López, said that Lotte’s arrival in the town “will be a major boost to industrial development and the local economy of Mont-roig del Camp, and will also benefit the entire region in view of the dimensions involved. Reindustrialisation, job creation and economic recovery will be of paramount importance. We are fully committed to the project.”

This was the first meeting between the Catalan Government, Lotte Energy Materials and the Mont-roig del Camp municipal council since the Lotte group bought ILJIN Materials and began the project last March. An initial investment of almost 400 million euros for the construction of a first plant is planned for the first phase of the project. This first copper foil factory in the El Baix Camp municipality is expected to be operational in 2025, with an annual production capacity of 30,000 tonnes of elecfoil and the creation of 200 jobs.
