The President of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, stated that “this week Catalonia is at the centre of economic research”, as it brings together the most important actors in the world of economic policy who are working, as he emphasised, “to address some of the most significant challenges we face”.

The head of the Executive pronounced these words at the closing ceremony of the institutional event of the annual Congress of the European Economic Association (EEA) and Econometric Society (ES) - EEA-ESEM 2023, which was held this evening at the Palau de Pedralbes and was attended by the Minister of Economy and Finance, Natàlia Mas.

The congress, which is organised by the Barcelona School of Economics (BSE) and which this year celebrates its 38th edition, debates current issues in economic policy. The conference will address the climate crisis, the macroeconomic implications of the war in Ukraine, the energy crisis, inequality (including gender inequality), immigration, digital technology and its regulations, and monetary policy, among other things.

During his speech, the president thanked the organisers for choosing Catalonia as the host for the event and told the more than 1,200 people attending the congress that the Catalan nation “is one that is proud of its identity, but with an important component called diversity”. This diversity, Aragonès remarked, “is one of the characteristics of Catalan society and one that makes us very proud”.

At the end of his speech, President Aragonès thanked the organisers for their dedication, given that “together with the rest of the country’s research centres, they contribute to generating knowledge” and this knowledge “helps us to provide answers to the great challenges we face as a society,” he remarked.
