The President of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, today expressed his condolences to the people of Morocco and to the Catalans of Moroccan origin for the victims and the “devastating effects” of the earthquake that struck early this morning.

“From here, all our heartfelt thoughts go out to the people of Morocco and also to all the Catalans of Moroccan origin who today are experiencing these events today with tremendous pain, a pain that we share with the rest of the country”, he said during the ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of the Collective Rights of Peoples, organised by CIEMEN (Escarré International Centre for Ethnic Minorities and Nations).

The head of the Executive explained that the Government is in contact with the local authorities and has made itself available to collaborate in this emergency situation. This afternoon, the president had an opportunity to speak with the Moroccan ambassador to Spain, to whom he offered the assistance of the emergency services of the Generalitat de Catalunya, from the fire brigade to Civil Protection, and all possible support from a humanitarian point of view.

He also stressed that next week the Catalan Humanitarian Aid Committee will convene “to channel our solidarity with a nation that is suffering the effects of this earthquake”.
