1. The project focuses two fields of action: the gradual replacement of the current fleet with electric or zero-emission vehicles;and, the expansion and improvement of the regional network of public charging stations
  2. Both lines of action will be implemented in parallel and in four phases, scheduled from 2024 to 2027

The Government of Catalonia has approved the global project to begin the transformation of the Catalan Government’s vehicle fleet towards a sustainable zero emissions model. The objective is to gradually replace the mobile fleet of all the ministries of the Government of Catalonia and its public sector with electric vehicles or vehicles with the zero-emission environmental label, starting with official vehicles and extending this to public transport vehicles.

The second objective is to expand and improve the regional network of electric vehicle charging stations in all Government of Catalonia administrative buildings and, ultimately, across the road and urban network of Catalonia, to ensure service for the intercity public transport lines of the Government of Catalonia.

The project approved today includes two areas of action that will be implemented progressively over four phases during a period of 4 years.

The aim of this plan is to reinforce some of the initiatives already carried out by the Executive in recent years to comply with the European Green Deal Fit for 55 initiative, enforced in Catalonia by Law 16/2017 on Climate Change, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% in 2030, compared to 1990 levels.

2024: fleet of 100% zero-emission official vehicles

According to the approved schedule, 2024 will see the start of the replacement of the fleet of official vehicles used by the ministries of the Government of Catalonia and a part of its public sector with electric vehicles. In justified cases based on technical and operational reasons, vehicles with other zero-emission environmental labels may also be considered.

The transformation towards a sustainable mobility model has been a long-standing commitment

The Government of Catalonia started on the path of transformation towards a sustainable land mobility model several years ago. Proof of this are the different initiatives that are currently being carried out by different areas of the administration. For example, the introduction of electrification and environmental improvement criteria in the public procurement of vehicles and the implementation of charging stations in the buildings it occupies. It also has a number of programmes underway in this regard: the Strategic Plan for the deployment of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in Catalonia (PIRVEC), the Plan for energy saving and efficiency in buildings and facilities of the Generalitat (GENERCAT) and the management of the calls for MOVES grants to endow the region with charging stations and encourage the installation of this type of infrastructure in private and company car parks, among others.
