1. The President of the Government of Catalonia stated that the approval of the text by the Congress Justice Committee means “the road to ending the nightmare of repression has begun and a new reality has opened up based on the freedom of the people and of Catalonia”

At noon today, the president of the Government of Catalonia, Pere Aragonès, stressed that the approval of the Amnesty Law by the Congress Justice Commission “is recognition that the State repression was illegitimate” and noted that “this correction shows that those of us who have always claimed we were facing a politically motivated general cause were in the right. Today is a great day, because the road to ending repression has begun,” he reiterated.

In statements to the media in the Parliament of Catalonia, the head of the Executive stated that the approval of this legislative text “is the beginning of the end of a nightmare in the form of repression, which has meant prison, exile and the threat of imprisonment or disqualification to hundreds of people and economic ruin for their families.

Pere Aragonès, who expressed his gratitude to all the parliamentary groups that supported the approval of this law in the Commission, said that “my thoughts go out to everyone who feels more relieved today, to all those who are already looking forward to embracing their friends, their colleagues, their relatives, at home, in Catalonia. My thoughts also go out to all those who have been worried about their future, a future that could have been behind bars due to political repression,” he concluded.

The president also noted that “this agreement is bad news for those who use the National High Court or the Supreme Court to play politics with the Criminal Code”. And he remarked that “politics is conducted through votes and parliaments; the Criminal Code applies to other things”.
