The Government has approved by decree the creation of the Register of health professionals who are conscientious objectors to direct intervention in the practice of abortion. This electronic administrative registry, operated under the Ministry of Health, will be confidential and will not be public. Only those responsible for the direction or management of health centres authorised to abortions will have access, within the scope of their respective powers, in order to manage the correct scheduling of this activity.
The declaration of conscientious objection shall not include, in any case, the reason for the objection. In addition, professionals who declare themselves to be objectors will be so in both public and private healthcare, and, at any time, they may modify or revoke their objection by submitting the corresponding statement to be entered in the Register. Revocation shall be without prejudice to the right to make a new declaration of conscientious objection.
One of the purposes of creating this registry is to provide the competent units with information on the number of conscientious objectors in each health centre authorised to perform abortions, in order to manage the proper provision of public health care with criteria of equality, equity and quality of care.
