1. Founded in 2022, its main objective is to encourage and promote Catalan culture and language in the Mexican state of Yucatán

The Government of Catalonia has approved the official recognition of the Catalan Cultural Centre of the Yucatán Peninsula as a Catalan community abroad. This new addition joins the more than one hundred organisations around the world listed on the Register of Catalan Communities Abroad with official recognition from the Government of Catalonia.

Founded on 11 September 2022 in Mérida, Mexico, the association has the triple objective of fostering and promoting Catalan language and culture, strengthening the social, historical and economic links between Catalonia and Yucatán, and uniting the Catalan expat community established in the Mexican state.

The Catalan Cultural Centre of the Yucatán Peninsula is made up of a dozen people, both Catalan and Mexican, and since its foundation in 2022, its activity has been considerable.

Specifically, the organisation has established socio-cultural synergies with local organisations and universities in the area and, so far, has promoted activities to mark Sant Jordi and the National Day of Catalonia, as well as a lecture on the figure of the architect Antoni Gaudí.

Catalan communities abroad

The Catalan expat communities, gathered on the Catalonia abroad portal, are a meeting and reference point for Catalans who live outside the country and who wish to preserve and enrich their link with the Catalan language and culture. The communities also collaborate with institutions and organisations in their area to promote knowledge of Catalonia.

Official recognition as a Catalan community abroad will enable the Catalan Cultural Centre of the Yucatán Peninsula to benefit from the services, aid and advantages offered by the Government of Catalonia.
